The Lyons Garden Club is excited to announce a new project called “Plant it Forward”!  The idea behind this project, which was actually conceived by Eagle Crest Elementary teacher Sheila Freehill and the students of the 4th grade class, is to help plant flowers in some of the yards of Lyons’ homeowners who were affected by last fall’s flood.

The fourth grade children wanted to help in some way, and with the help of Ms. Freehill, 4th grade teacher Stephanie Potter, and Jennifer Ordway, they decided to have a bake sale, collection jar, and dollar drive to raise money and donate to Lyons. Several teachers at Eagle Crest live in Lyons, and they contacted Lyons resident Deb Simms and the Lyons Garden Club to see if somehow the donation could be used for flowers. After receiving a very generous donation from the 4th grade class of Eagle Crest Elementary, the Lyons Garden Club is launching this opportunity to any Lyons resident who would like part of their flower beds, lost due to flood damage, planted with bulbs or perennials of their choice.

Those interested will complete an application, which will be reviewed by the LGC Board of Directors. Entries are due by August 31, 2014, at which time ten recipients will be chosen for the project. Recipients will have the opportunity to consult with the Lyons Garden Club for plant options.  The LGC will provide $100.00 worth of flowers, mulch and free labor.  Applicants must own and reside on the property under consideration, provide a ready-to-plant area or pots, and also have a readily available water source.   Once planting is completed, the homeowner is responsible for maintaining the plants. In keeping with the spirit of The Lyons Garden Club, each recipient will also receive our signature plant in the form of daffodil bulbs!

If you would like to participate, please complete the application and mail to Anne Marie Mikoni/ Plant it Forward, PO Box 1608, Lyons, CO 80540 or download here  and email to mikonanne@aol.com (Subject: Plant it Forward).

If you would like to donate to this project, please contact Sue Wratten at lyonscogardenclub@gmail.com.

The Lyons Garden Club and the students of Eagle Crest are looking forward to “Plant it Forward”!
